Apple TV Troubleshooting guide

Troubleshooting Apple TV For Common Issues
Apple TV 4K has turned out to be the most successful streaming device from Apple. With this, Apple has introduced some brand new features such as 4K UHD support, HDR imagery, P3 wide gamut color display and numerous enhancements in terms of improved Siri features, new home screen and Apple Music.

While the functionality is quite similar to previous Apple TV devices, there’s a lot to explore in Apple TV 4K. But many users face difficulty while performing several tasks due to a new interface and added features. So here’s a basic troubleshooting guide to fix the most common issues that arise in Apple TV 4K and other Apple TV devices.

AirPlay Not Working

The AirPlay feature in Apple TV lets you mirror the contents of your Mac, iPhone or iPad on your TV screen at the press of a button. While the feature works flawlessly most of the times, it may start giving trouble at some point in time. For example, if you enable AirPlay on your Mac or iPhone, sometimes it doesn’t detect your Apple TV. But it is mostly because you probably didn’t enable AirPlay on your Apple TV. Remember, AirPlay must be enabled on both the devices for it to work. To enable AirPlay on your Apple TV, go to Settings > AirPlay and select from the two options i.e Everyone or Anyone on the same Network. Selecting former will allow any Apple device within its vicinity to connect with the Apple TV and the latter will allow access to the Apple devices on the same WiFi network as your Apple TV.

Storage Issues

If you usually install a lot of apps and games on your Apple TV, it might get low on storage. This is obviously not good for your Apple TV for many reasons. Not only does it refrain you from installing new apps, but if you are running low on storage, you might start experiencing frequent app crashes. While the ultimate solution is to uninstall the unused apps, you can speed up the process by examining which apps are consuming maximum storage space. To check that, go to Settings > General > Manage Storage.

Sound Issues

It happens many times on Apple TV that the sound goes off unexpectedly. In most of the cases, it happens when you have connected external audio hardware with your Apple TV. In that case, first, restart your television as well as the audio hardware and see if that makes any difference. If even that doesn’t work, check your audio settings. Go to Settings > Audio and Video and make sure that the right speakers are selected. Also, make sure that the Audio Mode is set to Auto.

How To Reset
If you’ve tried everything but your Apple TV is still experiencing glitches like app crashes or frequent hanging, the best way to fix this is to hard reset the device. However, keep in mind that performing a hard reset will erase all the local content saved on your Apple TV including app data, browsing history and bookmarks etc. To restore your Apple TV to factory settings, go to Settings > System > Reset.

The New Apple TV Requires 25Mbps For 4K Streaming

Apple TV 4K
It’s been several years since the 4K streaming was introduced in the worldwide market. While all the leading streaming service providers such as Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and Roku have had the 4K integration about a year ago, Apple has finally rendered support for the same with the launch of its brand new Apple TV also known as Apple TV 4K. Being the fourth generation to the Apple’s elite class streaming player lineup, there are huge expectations from this OTT streaming device. Of course, it’s the first one of the Apple TV products to offer 4K streaming and HDR display that gives a stunning visual appeal to the pictures you see on your TV.

It’s quite obvious that for streaming media content in 4K UHD, you need an exceptionally fast internet connection. Usually the 4K streaming can be attained at an average connection speed of 15-20 Mbps. But for a seamless streaming experience, Apple recommends a minimum speed of 25 Mbps for its new Apple TV 4K.

What If Your Internet Connection Speed Drops?
Apple has imposed a minimum internet connection speed of 25 Mbps for 4K UHD streaming through Apple TV 4K on all the 4K supported television sets. This means if your internet speed drops and goes below the threshold, your Apple TV will automatically switch the streaming settings to normal depending on the speed of your internet connection. All this is mentioned in the support document released by Apple quite recently.

How To Find 4K Videos On iTunes Store?
The 4K videos are played in the highest resolution that is currently available. While the normal HD videos support a resolution of 1920x1080, 4K videos are played in 3840x2160 thereby offering a more detailed and sharper imagery. Besides, the HDR support provides a wide gamut of colors with high luminance and vibrancy. If you have previously purchased an HD video from the iTunes Store, then it may or may not play in 4K with HDR10 imagery. But you can easily find new videos on the iTunes Store that support 4K resolution. As a matter of fact, all the movies and videos available on the iTunes Store can be played in high definition. Some videos may also support Dolby Vision and HDR10 display. When you buy or rent a movie from the iTunes Store, it is automatically played in the best resolution supported on your TV. So if your TV is 4K compatible, it will automatically play a movie in 4K resolution or the best quality that is available for that particular movie.
